It Ain't All Roses

Many wonderful extras to living in the country!  Coyotes, rabbits, deer, owls, crunchy prairie grass, and thistles!

Kenny spear-headed the thistle-pulling project.  And just in time, too.
If you don't get them before they go to seed, you'll have even more the next year.
Sarah grabbed a tool and jumped into this photo.  But if you asked her, she'd admit she didn't pull any pricklies.

This girl can WORK!

Just about done for the day.  After about 5 hours of good hard work, Kenny took the crew and some neighbors to Texas Roadhouse for steak. A well-deserved payment!

These little ones were bummed that they had to stay home from the Roadhouse.  But I suppose playing in the water all day doesn't earn you a steak around here. And yes, Michael is swimming in his clothes.

Unpacking More than Boxes

You know they always say the box is more fun to play with than the gift inside.
Michael Jude thought it might be fun to make a nest in a partially unpacked box. He was happy as a clam until he tried to get out and couldn't. He is quite a big boy and had trouble hoisting himself out!
He cried and fussed and finally gave up as his Mama stood by heartlessly to take pictures.
And we did get him out. Eventually. As soon as we stopped laughing.

Tarryall

When Kenny and I began the process of looking for our new home, we had lots of discussions and prayers as we tried to focus in on a good place to land.  We decided the most important things were some kind of Great Room (my husband's top want) and a ranch style for the main level (after all, we will most likely be growing *ahem* older in this home and really don't want to keep doing the stairs thing for 20 more years).  We also knew we wanted more outside room for the little ones to run around.

Even after our home was under contract, our realtor cautioned us against looking for homes too soon.  It's a seller's market, and he was concerned we would get our hopes up but not have a good enough offer to get a home we wanted.  So we waited.  And all the while there was this house on Tarryall Way, not being sold.  We had it bookmarked on my laptop for quite a while, and as all the other homes came and went, there it stayed.

What was wrong with Tarryall, so that it wasn't selling?  Well, what we didn't know was that it went under contract 3 times while we were waiting to be able to make an offer.  Three different times the contract fell through.  One over animal restrictions (and not being able to have goats isn't exactly going to keep my hubby from buying a home, right?) and another over a dishonest buyer.

When we did end up coming to look at 'Tarryall', as we affectionately called it, we had some thinking to do.  The home was much better looking than the photos on the listing.  It is quite outdated in parts (think 'orange linoleum in the bathroom, mauve curtains in the family room, and bedroom lights that make you feel like you have on rose-colored glasses'). But the kitchen (which is simply wonderful!) has been updated.  In person, the rooms seemed roomier and the prairie seemed a little more tree-ish. We didn't fall in love at first, but as the days went by, we kept thinking of the things we really liked about Tarryall. The utility/laundry room is big (heavenly sigh).  There are five whole bedrooms (almost too many, if you ask me, but it is working out nicely).  Two real fireplaces.  A beautiful view.  And 7.77 acres of quiet. It's a ranch-style with a walkout basement.  But it didn't have a Great Room.  And so, my increasingly-visionary husband started to think.  And pray. And when he thinks and prays, you had better get out of the way.  Not that he would notice you anyhow!

Kenny called our realtor, who is also an appraiser and a renovator.  They talked about turning the garage into that Great Room, and the outbuilding into a garage.  There was electricity in the air as the ideas went flying. For days Kenny was in planning mode.  And one morning he woke up and told me that we are buying this house and remodeling it.  We offered $28,000 lower than the asking price and got it!

As we planned and dreamed, we hung our hats in the basement of a family we met years ago.  We all had plenty of space and were just so well-cared for.  We got closer to this family than I thought we would. And although it was a restless time, there was just so much good.

And so, on August 2nd, we bought our next home. And we moved the mattresses in right away so we could stay the night.  On the way to the house, we saw this rainbow.  It looked like it was ending right at Tarryall!

Sunshine Girls

I am working on a post about our new home, with pictures and all.  But for tonight I will leave you with sweetness that Emma captured on Joey's phone yesterday.
The little girls decided to explore some of the back 40 yesterday. It is so wonderful to see them running and tiring themselves out.

Playing in the water out by the garden space.

A few weeks back, Eliana decided to give herself a haircut.  She was very proud of her work until she looked in the mirror.  Then she cried.  After that, Sarah told her she looked like one of the little boys at our church.  Ellie cried even harder, as I tried really really hard not to laugh. And then of course I consoled her, and trimmed it all to match.  Sort of.
Here she is, sporting her new do with a lovely summer suit...

... And here is Sarah, wearing a turtleneck? And sweat pants. In August.

Different as night and day.  Wonderful treasures of mine.

The Strange Summer

'Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the LORD, The Creator of the ends of the earth, neither faints nor is weary.  His understanding is unsearchable." Isaiah 40:28

What a Wonderful God we serve.

This Mama is in her reflective mood tonight...
Already I feel the weather changing just a bit.  And if you know me at all, you know that makes me very happy.  But I also feel a good bit out of sorts, as does the rest of my family.  Here we are heading into early fall (yes, it does 'fall' early in Colorado) and we feel we didn't ever get much of a summer.  Just a big blur, it was, of pushing forward and working hard, then holding still, and now pushing forward and working hard again.  It's such a strange thing to feel displaced and unfamiliar.  And at times it has been downright hard for us. We've not only started over physically, but we have many relationships that have changed, and some of those have been tough.
An elder and his family left our church last month and others have followed. Our neighbors are strangers.  Our older children have relationships that are changing, and some are painful and disappointing.  I think we are all feeling the toll it takes to uproot and move a family from one home to another, from one town to another, from city to country, from familiar and well-worn to awkward and different.  I am a steady. And I am getting older. And as much as we really like our new place, I'm kinda hopin' we don't have to do this again for a long time!
Bear with us, we are
just a bit weary at the moment!

The Sargents Are Home!

No photos tonight, just a quick note to say that the Sargents are still around!  Long story short, we sold our wonderful little home in town and closed July 2nd.  Then we moved into the (very large) basement of some friends for 5 weeks, as we awaited the closing on our new home.  We had no internet connection for those 5 weeks, hence the silence on this blog.
Last Friday afternoon, we became the happy and very thankful owners (well, if you don't count the bank...) of a super wonderful home in the country. We are now up to our eyeballs (literally and very seriously) in boxes of stuff that we no longer want and have learned to live without. And we are giddy with excitement and pinching ourselves and high-fiving and squeezing everybody we see. It's so good to be home.
I am hoping to do an overview blog soon, with pictures and such on the last 5 weeks, and then start blogging regularly again, starting with photos of our new place.
I am so so tired tonight, but restful and blessed.
